M'am--Watching Vera Yet Again

Thirteen seasons, this British mystery series, based on Anne Cleeves's novels, has been running. And John and I are working our way through it for the second time.  The plots are twisty, the main characters engaging, and the ever-changing cast of suspects and witnesses have us wondering where DO they find such 'real' people? It's the sort of thing the Brits do so well . . .

But the real appeal for me, I've realized, is watching this dumpy, middle-aged woman in her house dresses and signature mackintosh head up a diverse team of mostly men--and seeing them, aside from an occasional eye-roll, just say, "M'am" and got on with whatever she's told them to do.

No counter suggestions, no hesitation, no argument. Just "M'am."

Sigh.

It has been a most excellent series. In the teaching profession, all appeared equal to me with few eye rolls. My last principal was a lady with whom people trod carefully. :)
