I often dream of having one flag, an earth flag. If you look at our pale blue orb from space their are no boarder marking between countries, states or nations. When we put aside our differences and all pick up a common cause of caring for and restoring our only home, then the garden of eden will be all around us. I can dream can't I ?
Jimehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16938424282517586036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764237570467034909.post-18749376112520773852015-07-09T08:27:54.941-04:002015-07-09T08:27:54.941-04:00Kathy D. -- the sooner it comes down the better, a...Kathy D. -- the sooner it comes down the better, as far as I am concerned. I understand the regional pride aspect of the flag but am all too aware of the taint of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow etc. that are attached to that flag. But there are a great many people who will cling to the flag all the harder, thinking it might be taken from them. The Civil War was about slavery, the right of states to utilize free labor of enslaved people and to abuse them and "sell" them, separating loved ones, etc. What good do they see? What heritage do they hold onto?

Not to mention how anyone can hold onto a religious attitude, as the premise of all the great religions is the Golden Rule, about treating other people decently.

I see protesters in the South taking down that flag, demonstrating against it, speaking up. It's time to get rid of it for once and for all and embrace our sisters and brothers in unity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764237570467034909.post-68921748737606449382015-07-01T21:31:11.646-04:002015-07-01T21:31:11.646-04:00Well said, Vicki!Well said, Vicki!Victoriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10851516387194415387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764237570467034909.post-43754615956092348152015-07-01T11:15:45.818-04:002015-07-01T11:15:45.818-04:00Well written as always and right to the point. The name of my high school football team was ... the Rebels.

Our history classes always involved Virginia at the center. Not much about the rest of the world.

I am sure you and I would have much to talk about...when that day arrives and we do actually meet.

xoFranceshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08352407314710067616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764237570467034909.post-48586728850203156592015-07-01T09:44:07.957-04:002015-07-01T09:44:07.957-04:00Vicki, So well said. She was very small and crippled from a very bad automobile accident. She would go around the house doing her chores always humming a tune. When a thunderstorm came she would sit in a dark corner and say the Lord was speaking and not move till the storm passed. There couldn't have been more than 10 to 12 black families that lived in a town of 2000 back in the early 1950's in the Great Smokies.

As to the rebel flag. I always associated that with the kind that were more criminal than civil. Riding around in pickup trucks, drinking and fighting and generally no good for nothing. If "that's who we are" then it is time to vote that kind out of office.

Thank you for bringing back those good memories. THAT flag is a symbol of the fight to keep slavery and then later a symbol that civil rights were not acceptable. And while that is definitely a part of the heritage of the Southern United States, it is not the only heritage the South has. There are many wonderful and lovely things that make up the South as well, why not cling to those things? Why cling to the one clear symbol of enslavement, lynchings, murder, rape, economic injustice, etc.?

In Germany, the swastika is relegated to museums. It is illegal to fly it but the children are very emphatically taught in school the horrors of the Holocaust. Because it is illegal to fly the swastika, the neo-Nazis, the skinheads, fly the Confederate Stars and Bars instead. Now obviously there are people who buy into that way of thinking, not just in the South, but there are many who don't and yet cling to that flag as their heritage. Why?KarenBnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-764237570467034909.post-13006128605947607022015-07-01T08:18:40.321-04:002015-07-01T08:18:40.321-04:00I'm glad that time is over, although some atti...I'm glad that time is over, although some attitudes still hang on I've noticed. I'm a little confused about the reasons for the civil war. Some say it was all about slavery, others have a different opinion.
I must say it amazes me that anyone could treat people of a different race with such disrespect as was shown to the slaves but it still goes on today in other parts of the world.
My own country is not blameless either because we were part of the slave trade.
I hope that with each year that passes we can find it within ourselves to improve our attitudes and treat others as we would like them to treat us.Stella Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06699491230987143490noreply@blogger.com
